Drum Making

Drum Making EnergyWorkshop
Facilitator: Kevin Yelich
When: TBA
Location: Spruce Grove

What to bring to the workshop:
Students are able to bring their drums home right after workshop, they may want a cardboard box to put them in for journey home. People can bring with them (but not necessary) a good pair of scissors (to trim hide if necessary), leather punch, old bath towel to keep there work area dry, sacred item/smudge, if they want, but all they need to do is show up as everything will be there.

Actual construction (as a group) will be between 1 to 1.5 hours, drum skin is pre cut and soaked. Individually, a drum could be put together in 30 minutes easily with this technique. Then we will make some natural drum sticks to compliment them.

Drums are very sturdy, useable and beautiful, with this technique, and easy for anyone to do. We will meditate and smudge; tell stories and native folklore, and enjoy the 2 -3 hours, is a great time to share in this process.

Materials used are of best quality and great for all ceremonies including the challenging and” extreme temperatures!!" of a Sweat Lodge
Remember, it’s our energy we put into the drum, remind people to really prepare energetically prior.

Drum making is passed on traditionally from elder to "eager student" who is deemed ready for the right to hold a sacred drum". Kevin is honored to pass on his knowledge of traditional hand drum making, as it has been passed on to him over the years.

This will get you in tune for the upcoming spring solstice sweat lodge.

The two sizes of drums we are making:
10" - $150 - Higher pitch, includes all supplies and workshop
13" - $175 - Lower pitch, includes all supplies and workshop

Drums seen in the drying process. They take 2 to 3 days to dry. Yes, those are clothes pins around the rim, a technique to keep hide down. They are beautiful, authentic and created and made by you.
